How to connect Agilent 5000 series ICP-OES systems to Agilent ICP Expert software via LAN

Steps to Follow

How to connect Agilent 5000 series ICP-OES instruments to Agilent ICP-Expert software using the standard configuration of a static IP address

The Agilent 5000 series ICP-OES uses a LAN communication between the computer and instrument.

  Caution
Caution: Any changes to default network settings will not be accessible by Agilent Representatives. This procedure details the standard configuration using a static default IP address for the instrument, and does not take into account any additional network settings or connections.
  1. Connect the LAN cable between the computer and instrument.
    1. The ICP-OES connection port is on the right side of the instrument
  2. Set up the static IP address on the computer
    1. On Microsoft Windows 10 PCs, right click the Windows Icon and type Settings
    2. In the Settings application, select Network & Internet, then select Change adapter options
    3. Using the mouse, right click Local Area Connection and select Properties
    4. Select the box next to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) (ensure that there is a check mark in the box)
    5. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) so that it is highlighted in blue then select Properties
    6. Select Use the following IP address and type 192.168.1.127
    7. Type 255.255.255 in the Subnet masks field
    8. No values are required for the other fields (leave blank) (Figure. 1)

Figure 1. Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties

    9. Select OK and close out the settings
  3. Set up the static IP address on the Instrument
    1. The ICP-OES uses a default IP address of 192.168.1.128
    2. Open an Internet Explorer browser and type the default IP address (192.168.1.128) into the Web address bar. This should open the Agilent ICP-OES Web Utility welcome page (Fig. 2)

Figure 2. Agilent ICP-OES Web Utility welcome page

    3. The welcome page will show the ICP-OES instrument serial number. Verify that this value matches the instrument connected to your PC via LAN cable
    4. The Hostname and Description fields are set by user preference. The IP Address and Network Mask must match the Instrument Default IP address and the Subnet Mask entered into the PC settings.
  4. Close the Web browser, then open Expert software to connect to the instrument in the software (Fig. 3)
    1. Select the Instrument page in ICP Expert, then select Connect and the Hostname or IP address of your instrument

  5. If the values do not match the default values listed above, edit the values in the ICP-OES Web utility page, and select Apply to save these settings
    1. If a user name and password are required, the default user name is admin and the default password is Password. Select OK.
    2. If the Web utility requests restarting the instrument, press the button on the lower left front of the instrument (Standby button), and wait until the LED status indicator is no longer blinking, then press the power button again to restart the instrument.
    3. Proceed to step 4 above and connect the instrument in ICP Expert
      1. If any changes were made to the default settings, select New Connection and enter the IP address that was saved in the Web utility page
  6. Successful connection between the instrument and the software can be verified by a solid green status LED on the front-right side of the instrument.
