MS40-S and MS-40+ Foreline Pump Oil Change for ICP-MS Systems

Issue

How to replace the Foreline Pump Oil in the MS-40+ or MS-40-S?

Background

The oil should be replaced at least once every - months, or when the oil color is indicates it needs to be changed. The foreline pump should be checked monthly. 

Items Required

• AVF Platinum Foreline Pump Oil (p/n X3760-64004)
• Oil Collection Container (at least 1 liter in size)
• Oil nozzle cap (or funnel)
• Paper towels
• 10 mm hex key
• Chemical resistant gloves
• Safety glasses (goggles)
• Protective mask
• Oil drain kit (p/n G8400-67315) for foreline pump models with the check valve
• Oil tilt tray with wheels (p/n G8400-60315) – Recommended

Steps to Follow

Warning:  The surface of the foreline pump may be HOT, do not touch the pump until it has cooled. Never add pump oil while the pump is on. Do not touch the oil. The oil may be hot. The residues from some samples are toxic. Properly dispose of the oil according to local law and regulations. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses (goggles), and a protective mask

Caution:  When you turn off the foreline pump, wait at least 15 seconds before restarting it. Use only Agilent recommended pump oil appropriate for your pump. Using a different oil can substantially reduce pump life and invalidates the pump warranty.

Check Figure 1 to see if your MS40+ or MS40-S has a check valve installed.

Replacing the Oil with a check valve installed on the oil outlet

Warning:  DO NOT use the software "Drain Foreline Pump Oil" function with a check valve and oil drain kit (p/n: G8400-67315). Using this function will cause sudden drainage and risk of splashing oil. Keep feet clear of the pump while it is tilted to drain oil, as the pump is heavy.

1. Locate the oil drain kit (p/n: G8400-67315) (Figure 2).

2. Turn off the foreline pump (Vacuum Off) and confirm the foreline pump breaker switch on the rear of the ICP-MS is off (O).
3. Unplug the power cord from the back of the foreline pump and leave the power cord unplugged while performing this procedure
4. Place the pump on the oil tilt tray with wheels (p/n G8400-60315) (Figure 3, Item 1)
5. Use the integrated tilt stand to raise the back end of the pump by pressing down with your foot on the tilt stand (Figure 3, Item 2).
6. Once the horizontal bar of the tilt stand is parallel to the floor, engage the wheel brakes to lock the tray in the tilted position (Figure 3, Item 3).
   

   Tip: If you do not have an oil tilt tray, raise the pump so that it is higher than the container being used to collect the oil, then place something beneath the back pump that is capable of withstanding its weight and will not tip over.

7. Locate an oil collection container and place it in front of the pump at about the length of the oil drain kit (Figure 4, Item 1)
8. Remove the oil fill plug using a 10 mm hex key (Figure 4, Item 2)
9. Unscrew the check valve cap from the oil outlet and set aside (Figure 4, Item 3)
10. Remove the green rubber cap from the end of the oil drain kit (Figure 4, Item 4)
11. Attach the metal fitting of the oil drain kit to the check valve on the oil outlet. (Figure 4, Item 5). As soon as the oil drain kit is screwed on, the check valve opens, and oil will begin to drain.

12. Allow the oil to drain completely.
13. Detach the oil drain kit from the check valve.
14. Re-attach the cap of the check valve.
15. Return the pump to the position for normal operation (Figure 3, 1). Grasp the upper power unit of the pump and put your foot on the tilt stand. To avoid bumping the pump, slowly raise your foot to control the tilt stand's return while gently pushing the pump forward (Figure 5).

16. Attach the supplied nozzle cap to the new oil bottle. Position the venting port upwards and place the nozzle in the oil inlet (Figure 6). If you do not have the nozzle cap, use a funnel.

17. Pour in about 1 liter of oil, until the oil level is between the min and max. 
18. Re-attach the fill plug using the 10 mm hex key.
19. Clean up any oil spills.
20. Check for and tighten any loose connections, plugs, and caps.
21. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the foreline pump
22. Turn on the foreline pump (vacuum on)
23. Check the oil level during pump operation.
    1. If it is lower than the MIN line, turn the vacuum off and wait until the ICP-MS enters shutdown mode, then add oil.
    2. If it is higher than the MAX line, turn the vacuum off and wait until the ICP-MS enters shutdown mode, then follow the above steps to drain some oil.
    3. Recheck the oil level and continue until steps 23 a-b until the level is within range.
24. After 30 minutes, inspect the pump for leaks.
25. Dispose of the used oil using the correct laboratory procedures and according to local law and regulations.

Replacing the Oil with a drain hose attached to the oil outlet

Tips: If your pump has the old-style drain hose attached to the oil outlet, order the new-style drain kit with check valve and oil tilt tray with wheels, so you can install the check valve on the oil drain port and install the pump on the oil tilt tray the next time you replace your oil.

1. Prepare a container to collect the oil.
2. Turn off the foreline pump (vacuum off) but leave the foreline breaker on the back of the ICP-MS in the ON (I) position (up).
3. In the ICP-MS MassHunter software, click the Mainframe illustration on the Hardware pane, and click Drain Foreline Pump Oil …(Figure 7.)

   Caution: Make sure that the sampling cone is installed before proceeding. The foreline pump could be damaged during the oil drain process if the sampling cone is not installed.

    

4. Place the end of the drain hose into the collection container, then open the valve on the end of the hose (Figure 8).

5. In the MassHunter Software, click the ‘Drain Oil’ button (Figure 9).

6. The oil will start to drain immediately. A status bar indicating the time remaining to drain the oil will appear (Figure 10). When the oil has completely drained, click the “Stop” button.

7. Confirm that the oil has completely drained from the foreline pump. If oil remains in the pump, click the Drain Oil button again. Or, if no oil remains in the pump, click Next.
8. Close the valve for the oil drain line and click “Exit” to leave the Oil Drain wizard screen.
9. Remove the oil inlet cap. Attach the supplied nozzle cap to the new oil bottle. Position the venting port upwards and place the nozzle in the Oil Inlet (Figure 11). Note: if you do not have the nozzle cap, use a funnel.

10. Pour in about 1 liter of oil, until the oil level is between the min and max. 
11. Re-attach the fill plug using the 10 mm hex key.
12. Clean up any oil spills.

14. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the foreline pump
15. Turn on the foreline pump (vacuum on)
16. Check the oil level during pump operation.

17. After 30 minutes, inspect the pump for leaks.
18. Dispose of the used oil using the correct laboratory procedures and according to local law and regulations.
