This Information Applies To: HES ion source in 5977B/C GC/MSD, 7010 triple quadrupole GC/MS systems
The filaments are replaced as part of routine maintenance, or when they break (zero output current).
- Gloves, nylon, lint-free, clean (p/n large 8650–0030, medium G8135-80210, small 8650–0029)
- Cloth, 100% cotton, lint-free, clean (p/n 05980–60051)
- T6 Torx driver (p/n 8710–2548)
- Filament assembly, high efficiency dual filament (p/n G7002-60001)
- Ion source stand, supplied with instrument.
Steps to follow
Use Figure 1 as reference to identify the HES source parts in this procedure.

1. Filament block securing screw, 2. Ion source mount, 3. Finger grip on the filament block assembly, 4. Dual filament
Removing the old filament
Vent the MS, see How To Vent (Shut Down) the GC/MSD - EI - MassHunter.Warning: The analyzer, GC/MS interface, and other components in the analyzer chamber operate at high temperatures. Do not touch any part until you are sure it is cool.
Open the analyzer chamber, remove the ion source, and place it in the ion source stand on a clean clothCaution: To prevent contamination when working in the analyzer chamber always wear clean, lint free gloves
Remove the screw securing the filament block to the source mount (Figure 2)
Figure 2. Removing the securing screw
Hold the finger grip on the filament block, invert the ion source, and lift the source body off the filament block, and remove the filament block from the source.Caution: Dual filaments are brittle. Handle with extreme care.
Remove the dual filament from the filament block (see Figure 3)
Figure 3. Removing the dual filament
Installing the new filament
Caution: Dual filaments are brittle. Handle with extreme care.
Insert the three pins on the dual filament through the rear of the filament block (see Figure 4)
Figure 4. Installing the dual filament
Holding the ion source upside down, place the filament block in the source mount (see Figure 5)
Figure 5. Installing filament block
Place the source in the ion source stand
Use a T6 Torx screwdriver to tighten the screw securing the filament block to the source mount (Figure 6)
Figure 6. Tightening the securing screw
Close the analyzer chamber and pump down the MS. See How To Pumpdown (Start) the GC/MSD - EI - MassHunter
The MS will need an autotune before running samples.
