Agilent SPS 4 Autosampler Initialization Sequence and Troubleshooting

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent Spectroscopy Systems, SPS 4 Autosampler

Issue: When the Agilent SPS 4 autosampler powers up, it performs an initialization routine, which moves the probe arm to predefined positions on all its axes (X, Y, and Theta (rotational). See Figure 1. If the probe arm fails to travel the required distance along any of the axes, LEDs will light to indicate an error. The autosampler cannot be used in an error state.

Figure 1. Axis directions.   1 error LEDs,  2 X-axis,  3 Theta (T)-axis, 4 Z-axis

Discussion:

The initialization sequence is as follows (in this order):

  • probe raises to the extremes of the Z-axis
  • probe moves to front-middle position
  • probe travels to the extremes of the X-axis
  • probe travels to the extremes of the theta-axis
  • probe is moved around its motion envelope (eight positions)
  • probe positions itself above the fixed wash reservoir position (rear-middle)

Steps to Follow: If the autosampler fails to complete the initialization.

 Warning
Warning: The probe arm moves quickly. Keep the probe path clear during operation.
  1. Turn off the power and check each axis path manually to determine if there is any physical or mechanical obstruction.
  2. If no obstruction can be identified, turn the unit back on and allow it to attempt the reset procedure again.
  3. If still failing, the Error LEDs on the autosampler connection panel on the front of the instrument will display a code. There are four LED lights.

The LED pattern, where 1 is on and 0 is off, corresponds to an error code and description (Table 1). Note the error code and contact your Agilent Service Representative.
