Injecting dyes into a GC column?

Question

Our lab is trying to analyze samples of three silanes which have an oil blue dye in them. We are looking to test this solution in the easiest way possible but sample prep techniques are certainly an option. Does anyone have any experience with testing dyes on a column, is it harmful and what other ideas do you have?

Hi jessm2194, I already measured dyes, paints and resins in the past. The easiest way would be to use a hot needle technique. Instead of injecting the liquid directly into the GC., the volatile (as well the heavy volatiles) are only introduced via the Headspace sampler to the GC. You can use a 20 ml Headspace vial and add 5-10 µl of your sample into the vial. Afterwards the vial is then getting equilibrated at 200-280°C before the vapour is introduced into the GC. With this the need for sample preparation is reduced as well as GC Maintenance need (Liner, Column).
